Pictured above is one of the most beautiful knives I've ever known and ever worked with. It slices, dices, chops and shimmies with the best of 'em and makes food prep all that much more joyful. Sweet friends bought me a set of Wusthof knives for our wedding knowing that someday I would appreciate them. I don't think I had even registered for good knives due to my lack of cooking expertise...but thankfully I got good knives anyway and as the years have gone by and I actually quite enjoy cooking now, these knives are always close at hand.
Well, it was late on Wednesday night of last week...I was quite weary, but had two gorgeous butternut squashes just calling to me to be cut, roasted, and made into soup. I answered the call. Unfortunately, my weariness and slight impatience (it was 9:30pm and I wanted to be done before Sophie's bedtime routine beginning at 10pm) gave me an edge that didn't pay off. As I held the squash vertically and tried to slice downward my left index finger got caught in the crossfire of knife attacking squash. A trip to the ER, four stitches, and this massive bandage later, I'm doing OK. The injury has proven to score quite high on the entertainment value scale for Michaela, as she has played nurse to me and loved checking up on how I'm managing the pain!
